The best flooring for homes with pets and kids
Claws, spilled drinks, dropped toys and wet paws. Some floors shrug it off; some show every mark. Here's what works.

A family floor needs to cope with three things: scratches, water and noise. The good news is that modern floating floors are far tougher than they were ten years ago. The trick is matching the product and finish to how your household actually lives.
Our top pick: hybrid
Hybrid flooring is the most forgiving all-rounder for families. The rigid core doesn't swell with spilled water bowls or wet paws, the wear layer resists everyday scratching, and a damaged plank can be replaced rather than the whole floor.
Close second: laminate
Good laminate has an extremely hard wear layer, often more scratch-resistant than hybrid. It's a great choice for bedrooms and play rooms, but keep it away from laundries and places where water sits.
Can you have timber with a dog?
Yes, with realistic expectations. Real timber will pick up marks from claws over time — many owners like the lived-in character. Choose a harder species such as spotted gum, a matt or brushed finish that hides scratches, and wider boards with natural grain variation. Engineered timber in a brushed oak is a popular compromise.

Finish and colour matter as much as the product
- Mid-tone floors hide dust, hair and scratches better than very dark or very pale floors.
- Matt and textured surfaces hide scratches far better than gloss.
- Visible grain and knots disguise daily wear.
- Put a mat at the back door and under water bowls — it adds years to any floor.
