Five kinds of floor, each chosen for a reason. Here's where each one works best and what it costs relative to the others.
Engineered boards carry a genuine timber wear layer bonded to a cross-laid core, so they move far less than solid boards as Sydney swings between humid summers and dry winters. You get the look and feel of real oak or blackbutt, with wide boards and long lengths that solid timber struggles to offer at the same price.
Solid tongue-and-groove hardwood is still the benchmark. Boards are nailed to joists or glued to battens and then sanded and coated in place, so the finish is continuous, the colour is chosen on site, and the floor can be resanded many times over the decades.
Hybrid planks combine a rigid core with a tough printed wear layer. They click together over the existing floor in most cases, handle spills and wet paws, and are one of the fastest ways to put a consistent floor through a whole home — kitchen, laundry and all.
Modern laminate has come a long way. High-pressure wear layers shrug off chair legs and claws, textures follow the printed grain, and the price makes it a sensible choice for bedrooms, upstairs rooms and investment properties.
Herringbone and chevron floors are laid block by block from a centre line we set out in the room, so the pattern runs true to the walls and the main sightline. It's slower, more exacting work — and it shows.
